Sea Wasp

Underwater Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are a growing concern. Our Sea Wasp is ready to neutralise the threat.

Safety within reach

Sea Wasp, our latest generation of ROV based systems, was designed to successfully locate, identify and neutralise IEDs, especially in confined areas and challenging conditions like strong current, ports and harbours.

The hydrodynamically stable, highly reliable system boasts exemplary performance and low lifecycle costs.

A safer solution to ordnance disposal

With a high degree of operational autonomy, Sea Wasp takes vessels and operators out of harms way, providing a safer underwater solution to ordnance disposal. The concept is derived from the robotic systems used for disposal of land IEDs.

Sea Wasp

Sea Wasp represents a significant improvement in underwater operations against IEDs and similar threats by allowing bomb technicians to remove both improvised and conventional munition threats.

Configurable for any mission

Designed to be operated by as few as two people, the system can easily be configured to meet the requirements of any mission and includes a vehicle, generator, pilot station, winch and power supply unit.

It can be piloted from the surface using a control console located onboard a support vessel. Sea Wasp can also be piloted from a vehicle, on dock.

Transportable and easily deployable

Transportable over land in a light support vehicle, Sea Wasp can be deployed from harbour walls or the beach. It can be fitted to bespoke surface support vessels and has the flexibility to be loaded into multiple types of boat, including vessels of opportunity, rigid-hulled inflatable boats, as well as work boats, depending on mission requirements.

Cutting-edge sensors and navigation

Sea Wasp
The ROV's innovative sensor and navigation suite, which includes a wideband sonar, LED lights and video cameras, is primarily designed to locate targets that may have been placed on a ship's hull, harbour wall or the seabed.
Sea Wasp
When ready, the operator uses Sea Wasp’s powerful thrusters to lock it into position on a ship’s hull or harbour wall. Using the five-function manipulator arm, a tool kit can be positioned beside the target, ready for detonation.

Sea Wasp’s onboard Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) and Internal Measurement Unit (IMU) deliver navigational capability, allowing it to record and transmit specific waypoints. The vehicle itself incorporates Saab's unique iCON intelligent control system, as featured in our other mine countermeasure vehicles, enabling ultimate movement in six degrees of freedom for ultimate maneuverability.

Did you know...

The Sea Wasp can be summarized as a small, powerful and versatile ROV. Here are some interesting facts about the system you may not already know.

  • Sea Wasp is another name for the Box Jellyfish, the most venomous animal in the sea
  • Sea Wasp is able to engage targets above the waterline because of its powerful thrusters
  • The Sea Wasp controller can hover the vehicle by just letting go of the controls
